Deutsche Bahn Timetable Update: More Trains, Higher Prices

Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s national railway company, has launched a new timetable that significantly expands its train services across various regions, though this comes alongside an increase in ticket prices. This development introduces a multitude of changes in both long-distance and regional train services, aiming to enhance connectivity within Germany and extend to international destinations.

Expanded Long-Distance and International Services

The new timetable heralds an increase in long-distance train services, particularly on routes between Berlin and North-Rhine Westphalia, Berlin and Munich, and between Leipzig, Jena, and Nürnberg. Notably, Berlin and Vienna are now connected by a second direct ICE high-speed service. This expansion means passengers will have more frequent services, reducing travel times and improving accessibility between major cities. For instance, Berlin to Munich now boasts a half-hourly service, including a super-fast Sprinter connection every hour. The journey time on this route has been impressively reduced to just three hours and 45 minutes.

Additionally, international travel is set to improve with the introduction of a night-train service, the Nightjet, which will connect Berlin, Brussels, and Paris three times a week. This service is a collaboration between Deutsche Bahn and Austrian national rail services, amongst others, and is expected to become a daily service by October 2024.

Regional Connectivity and Infrastructure Modernization

In regional transport, significant improvements have been announced, especially in areas like Saxony-Anhalt and Baden-Württemberg. The Saale valley area, for example, will see an increase from one to five IC train connections daily. Magdeburg benefits with its first-ever connection to Hamburg and enhanced direct services to Berlin and Rostock.

Baden-Württemberg is also witnessing substantial growth in train services, with over 100 million train kilometers planned for the next year. New direct connections from Stuttgart to various destinations, including Ostfriesland and Innsbruck, are being introduced. Additionally, regional changes, such as improved connections between Stuttgart and Nürnberg and upgraded services around Lake Constance, signify Deutsche Bahn’s commitment to enhancing local travel.

Pricing Adjustments

Despite these service enhancements, Deutsche Bahn has announced an average increase of approximately 4.9% in the price of flexi tickets, which offer passengers more choice in train selection. The Bahncard 25, offering a 25% discount on journeys, now costs €62.90 per year, a €3 increase. However, prices for the Bahncard 50, saver, and super-saver tickets remain unchanged. This price adjustment is a response to the general price development and is part of the December timetable change.

Challenges and Future Plans

While the new timetable brings many positive changes, it also highlights ongoing challenges, such as the chronic unreliability in long-distance travel and persistent personnel shortages. These issues continue to affect punctuality and service regularity. Deutsche Bahn acknowledges these challenges and is set to begin a major renovation of the railway network starting next year. This extensive modernization, targeting several rail corridors by 2030, aims to progressively improve the overloaded infrastructure, with expectations of increased reliability post-2025.
