Chaos for Commuters and Travelers on Wednesday: GDL on Strike, Farmers Continue to Protest

Commuters and travelers in Berlin and Brandenburg are bracing for significant disruptions on Wednesday due to a combination of farmers’ protests and a three-day strike by the Train Drivers’ Union (GDL). This convergence of events is expected to create substantial traffic chaos across the region.

Farmers’ Protests and GDL Strike

The ongoing week of action by farmers, continuing their protests against agricultural policies, will see over 70 autobahn entrances in Brandenburg blocked by tractors from 9 AM to 3 PM. This will coincide with the GDL strike in the rail sector, impacting both passenger and freight services. The strike, starting early Wednesday morning at 2 AM, is set to last until Friday evening at 6 PM. The freight sector will feel the impact starting Tuesday evening.

Impact on Rail Services

The strike action by GDL members is anticipated to cause major disruptions to the S-Bahn, regional, and long-distance services operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB). The S-Bahn has released an emergency schedule, operating key lines like S3, S46, S5, and S9 on a 20-minute frequency. Restrictions are expected even before the official start of the strike due to controlled parking of trains.

Alternative Travel Arrangements

Passengers are advised to seek alternative modes of transportation, as the Berlin Transport Company (BVG) is not affected by the strike. Deutsche Bahn has announced a limited service plan for long-distance and regional trains, advising passengers to postpone non-essential travel. Tickets scheduled for use between Wednesday and Friday can be used later, with seat reservations cancellable at no charge. Passengers also have the option to reschedule their journeys to an earlier date.

Effects on Road Traffic

In addition to rail disruptions, the farmers’ action week is expected to heavily impact road traffic. While the Berlin Ring will remain open for potential future actions, over 70 autobahn entrances will be blocked, causing considerable delays and congestion.

School Attendance Adjustments

Given the expected travel disruptions, Brandenburg schools have suspended mandatory attendance for students reliant on public transport from Wednesday onwards. They will be provided with home learning tasks or distance learning options.

In summary, the combination of the GDL strike and farmers’ protests is set to significantly disrupt travel and commuting in Berlin and Brandenburg this Wednesday. Passengers are advised to plan ahead, seek alternatives, and stay informed about the latest travel updates and changes.
