Massive Crackdown Dismantles Düsseldorf Pizzeria-Linked Drug Network

German authorities have successfully dismantled a major drug trafficking network centered around a pizzeria in Düsseldorf. The pizzeria, known for its popular “pizza No. 40,” was discovered to be a front for distributing cocaine, marking a pivotal moment in the state’s ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes.

Discovery of the Illicit Operation

The illicit activities came to light during a routine inspection by the Gewerbeamtes on March 3, 2024. The 36-year-old owner of the Düsseldorf-based pizzeria was found to be delivering not only pizzas but also cocaine, discreetly included as a side dish labeled “pizza No. 40.” The unusual combination of food and drugs quickly made this pizza a top seller, unbeknownst to the unsuspecting customers.

Initial Arrest and Seizures

Upon discovering the drug distribution scheme, police acted swiftly. When officers arrived at the pizzeria, the operator attempted to evade arrest by throwing a bag of cocaine out of the window. Fortunately, the bag was intercepted by the responding officers, leading to the immediate seizure of 1.6 kilograms of cocaine, 400 grams of cannabis, and €268,000 in cash. Despite the substantial evidence, the operator was released two days later due to a lack of prior criminal records.

Resumption of Illegal Activities

Undeterred by the brief detainment, the pizzeria owner resumed his deliveries, including the notorious “pizza No. 40.” This bold move provided law enforcement with crucial leads, enabling them to trace the supply chain and identify other key players involved in the drug distribution network.

Comprehensive Police Operation

On October 17, 2024, a large-scale operation involving approximately 150 officers was launched to target the expanded network. This coordinated effort spanned 16 locations across North Rhine-Westphalia, including major cities such as Cologne, Wuppertal, Solingen, Hilden, Haan, Mönchengladbach, Erkrath, and Meerbusch. Special units were deployed to conduct thorough searches and apprehend suspects.

The operation led to the arrest of three primary suspects, including a 22-year-old man from Düsseldorf with a history of violence, theft, and drug-related offenses. This individual, an active Mixed Martial Arts fighter, is now facing multiple charges, including the large-scale trade of cocaine and cannabis, extortion, and kidnapping. Authorities have placed him in pre-trial detention with a €529,000 asset freeze, citing risks of flight and repeat offenses.

Additionally, a 30-year-old accomplice was detained in Cologne, and a 28-year-old was arrested in Haan. The arrests were supported by specialized tactical units due to some suspects’ involvement in organized fighting sports.

Discovery of Cannabis Plantations

During the operation, police uncovered two extensive cannabis plantations in Mönchengladbach and Solingen. The Mönchengladbach site, operated by a family with children, raised immediate concerns for child welfare, resulting in the removal of the minors from their home. The Solingen plantation housed 30 cannabis plants, further highlighting the widespread nature of the network’s activities.

Network Operations and Extortion Tactics

Investigations revealed that the network consisted of approximately twelve individuals who managed drug sales along the Rhine and Ruhr rivers. Between May and September 2024, the suspects are accused of committing 17 offenses, including the commercial sale of significant quantities of cannabis and cocaine, often in the double-digit kilogram range. The group employed extortion tactics to coerce other drug dealers, extracting around €30,000 in cash and confiscating vehicles through threats and coercion.

Ongoing Investigations and Future Charges

The comprehensive crackdown is expected to yield additional charges as authorities continue to dismantle the network’s remaining operations. The main suspect faces severe penalties, with potential multi-year prison sentences for each of the 17 charges. The investigation remains active, with law enforcement officials confident that further arrests and asset seizures will follow.

Impact on Local Drug Trade and Public Safety

This operation marks a critical victory for German police in their fight against drug trafficking. By targeting the nexus between legitimate businesses and illegal activities, authorities aim to disrupt the supply chains and reduce the prevalence of drugs in the region. The removal of key figures within the network not only hampers their operations but also enhances public safety across North Rhine-Westphalia.

The successful dismantling of this sophisticated drug ring underscores the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts and serves as a deterrent to other potential offenders. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring that the streets of Düsseldorf and surrounding areas remain free from the influence of organized drug trafficking.
